Rule of thirds

This is the perhaps the most important rule of composition. The rule of thirds (also known as the golden section) can be applied to all photographic subjects, although it is used in particular for landscape photography. The rule of thirds should be used regardless of the focal length of the lens that you are using or whether you are holding the camera in an upright or landscape format.

The rule of thirds was originally developed by painters, who would mentally grid a canvas to help achieve balance in their paintings. It is a very easy compositional aid to learn and should be the first thing that springs to mind when you are composing an image.

When you look through the viewfinder or use the LCD monitor, imagine that the scene is split into thirds – in other words, that there are two horizontal and two vertical lines intersecting the frame to create nine equal-sized rectangles. Ensure that the focal point is placed at any of the four points where the lines cross each other for the maximum visual harmony in the scene. Use either the upper or lower line as a guide for where to place the horizon, so that it sits along the lower or upper third of the image. Many cameras allow framelines to be activated on the LCD monitor and/or viewfinder to aid composition.
